Apple is preparing for what insiders are calling a pure high-end event this fall, signaling a dramatic shift in its smartphone strategy. Recent leaks from reputable industry sources, including notable Weibo leakers Instant Digital, suggest that the traditional lineup is being bolstered by a new, premium heavy-hitter: the iPhone Ultra.

While previous years focused on incremental Pro updates, 2026 appears to be the year Apple finally enters the foldable market, potentially merging the power of an iPhone with the canvas of an iPad mini.

The New Trio: 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Ultra

The core of the upcoming launch will consist of three flagship devices. According to leaked reports from Instant Digital, the lineup will feature the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra. This naming convention suggests that the foldable isn’t just a niche experimental device, but the new pinnacle of the iPhone family.

    A Breakthrough in Foldable Design

The iPhone Ultra is expected to adopt a book-style fold. Unlike earlier competitors, Apple is reportedly aiming for a crease-free display—a technical milestone that has eluded the industry for years.

    • Form Factor: The device will reportedly resemble two iPhone Air models stacked together, maintaining an ultra-thin profile when unfolded.
    • Displays: Users can expect a 5.3 to 5.5-inch outer display and a massive 7.6 to 7.8-inch inner screen.
    • Build: Continuing the premium trend, the Ultra will feature a titanium border and will likely launch in classic black and white options.

Performance: A20 Pro and the Return of Touch ID

Under the hood, the Ultra will share the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro series. This chip is built on a cutting-edge 2-nanometer process, utilizing Wafer-level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) technology to maximize efficiency. It will also debut Apple’s first in-house C2 cellular modem, moving away from Qualcomm’s 5G solutions.

In a surprising twist, the Ultra will likely lack Face ID. Reports suggest that Apple couldn’t shrink the Face ID components enough to fit into the device’s thin chassis. Instead, Touch ID is making a return, integrated directly into the power button—similar to the current iPad Air and mini.

Cameras and Software: A Different Kind of Pro

The iPhone Ultra’s camera array may actually be a slight step down from the Pro Max. It is rumored to feature a dual-lens setup (48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide), missing the Telephoto lens found on its Pro siblings. However, creators will benefit from two front-facing cameras (one for each screen) featuring the 18MP Center Stage technology.

On the software side, iOS 27 is expected to introduce exclusive multitasking features for the Ultra. While it won’t run a full version of iPadOS, it will support side-by-side app layouts to take advantage of the larger inner display.

    Launch Timing and Premium Pricing

Despite earlier rumors of delays, supply chain experts now believe the iPhone Ultra is on track for a September 2026 launch alongside the iPhone 18 series. Apple has reportedly increased its foldable display inventory by 20%, preparing roughly 11 million units for the initial rollout.

Innovation, however, comes with a steep price. Most analysts expect a starting price of roughly $1,999 for the 256GB model, making it the most expensive iPhone ever released.

    Editor's Take

Last week I used my friend's Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, and its massive inner screen completely changed how I multitask. However, the rumored iPhone Ultra design looks far superior. Apple's upcoming 4.5mm ultra-thin frame and completely crease-free display could make Samsung’s current foldables feel less refined by comparison.
