Meta is adding a new layer of transparency to its platforms. On April 23, 2026, the company announced a major update to its parental supervision tools: parents can now see the specific topics their teenagers are discussing with Meta AI.

The update is rolling out across Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram, giving parents more visibility into how their children are interacting with artificial intelligence.

Parents who have Supervision enabled on their teen’s account will see a new Insights tab. This section provides a summary of the topics the teen has asked the Meta AI chatbot about over the last seven days.

    • Broad Topics: The dashboard categorizes chats into groups like School, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Travel, Writing, and Health.
    • Detailed Subcategories: Parents can tap on a topic to see more detail. For example, Lifestyle might show interest in food or fashion, while Health and Wellbeing could include fitness or mental health.
    • Safety First: Meta will show parents the topic even if the AI refused to answer the teen’s question because it was inappropriate.

    Proactive Alerts for Sensitive Issues

While the general Insights tab shows broad interests, Meta is taking a much stricter approach to safety. The company is currently developing proactive alerts that will instantly notify parents if their teen attempts to discuss sensitive topics like self-harm or suicide with the AI.

    Helping Parents Start the Conversation

Meta understands that many parents feel out of the loop when it comes to AI technology. To help, they have partnered with the Cyberbullying Research Center to create conversation starters. These are guided questions found in the Family Center designed to help parents talk to their kids about AI in a non-judgmental way.

    The AI Wellbeing Expert Council

To ensure their AI remains age-appropriate, Meta has formed a new AI Wellbeing Expert Council. This group includes specialists in mental health, digital safety, and ethical AI. They will meet regularly with Meta’s product teams to review new features before they are released to teenagers.

The new AI Insights are available starting today for supervised Teen Accounts in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Brazil. Meta plans to roll these tools out to parents globally in the coming weeks.

Last month, a friend of mine's mother was alerted by ChatGPT Parental Controls that her son was in acute distress. He had actually shared a concerning ECG report with the AI because he was afraid to tell his family about his health, and his anxious messages triggered a safety notification. While the mother didn't see the medical report itself, the alert prompted a conversation where he finally opened up. It's similar to the new Insights tools Meta AI is rolling out to help parents track the general health topics their teens are discussing.
