OpenAI is shaking up the ChatGPT experience once again with the official rollout of GPT-5.5 Instant. This new foundation model replaces GPT-5.3 as the default daily driver for hundreds of millions of users. While the Instant series has always been known for its speed, this latest update focuses on making the AI significantly more reliable and personalized for everyday tasks.

    A Major Leap in Accuracy

Last month, this company launched the GPT 5.5 model, which is now set to become the default model. One of the most impressive improvements involves tackling hallucinations, which is when an AI confidently makes things up. In internal evaluations, GPT-5.5 Instant produced 52.5% fewer hallucinated claims in critical fields like law, medicine, and finance compared to its predecessor. It also showed much stronger logic in difficult subjects, jumping to a score of 81.2% on the AIME 2025 competition math test.

    Conversations That Feel Natural

Beyond the raw data, the new model is designed to feel more natural and conversational. OpenAI has tuned the AI to be less wordy by using roughly 30% fewer words and lines, delivering answers that are tighter and more to the point without losing substance. It manages to keep a warm personality while cutting back on unnecessary follow-up questions and excessive emojis that can sometimes make a response feel cluttered.

    Personalization You Can Control

Perhaps the most useful change for long-term users is how the AI manages context. GPT-5.5 Instant is much better at searching through your past chats, uploaded files, and even connected Gmail accounts to provide answers that actually fit your life. To keep this process transparent, OpenAI is introducing Memory Sources, which allow you to see exactly which past conversation or saved memory the AI used to personalize an answer. You remain in total control of this data, with the ability to delete outdated memories or correct the AI if it references something no longer relevant.

    Availability and the Road Ahead

GPT-5.5 Instant is rolling out now for all users and is available to developers through the API as chat-latest. For those who prefer the older version, GPT-5.3 Instant will remain available to paid users for a three-month grace period before it is officially retired. This move follows a period of significant user backlash earlier this year when the GPT-4o model was deprecated. By pushing forward with GPT-5.5, OpenAI is signaling a commitment to a future where AI is smarter, clearer, and more deeply integrated into our personal workflows.

    Editor's Take

Yesterday, I was chatting with GPT 5.4 for a long time and after a long chat it often forgot the topics of the previous chat and needed to be reminded through prompts. However, using GPT 5.5 I felt that its memory is more powerful which can remember a complex structure in a subtle way.
