Apple is preparing a significant shift in its artificial intelligence strategy by allowing users to select third-party AI models to power core features within iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. This move builds on Apple’s broader goal of turning its massive hardware ecosystem into a flexible AI platform rather than a closed system tied to a single provider.

The Extensions Feature: Personalizing Your AI

Mark Gurman’s report says, Internal testing of the upcoming software has revealed a new capability called Extensions. This feature, found within the Settings app, will allow users to decide which installed AI apps handle specific generative tasks.

    • Choice on Demand: Users can access generative AI capabilities from third-party apps for features like Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground.
    • Testing Partnerships: Apple has reportedly been testing these integrations with Google and Anthropic.
    • Voice Customization: Users may soon be able to assign different voices to different models—for example, using one voice for Apple’s on-device processing and another for a third-party assistant like Anthropic’s Claude.

A Strategic Shift for Apple and OpenAI

While OpenAI’s ChatGPT was the exclusive third-party partner when Apple Intelligence launched in 2024, its status is changing because usage has been more limited than expected and OpenAI is now recruiting Apple engineers to build its own AI hardware. By opening the door to rivals, Apple is moving away from a single-provider model to avoid being locked into the OpenAI ecosystem while simultaneously boosting the App Store by creating a new section to highlight compatible AI apps that developers can opt into. Furthermore, this shift allows Apple to maintain neutrality by continuing to offer its own in-house models while explicitly informing users that it is not responsible for any content generated by third-party services.

    What’s Next for iOS 27?

Under the leadership of incoming top executive John Ternus, Apple is doubling down on making the iPhone an AI-centric experience. Beyond the AI model choice, iOS 27 is expected to include a standalone Siri app, advanced AI photo-editing tools, and a specialized Siri mode within the Camera app. The official rollout of these features is slated for this fall.

    Editor's Take

I can already switch between Gemini, Amazon Alexa, and ChatGPT as my default assistant on Android, but it still feels clunky because I’m essentially just jumping between isolated apps. I’m really excited for iOS 27 because I’ll be able to bake models like Claude or Gemini directly into Siri, finally giving me the seamless, system-wide AI experience I’ve been waiting for.
