Meta is taking a significant step in AI privacy by launching Incognito Chat for Meta AI on WhatsApp and the standalone Meta AI app. Meta announced, this new feature allows users to discuss deeply personal topics—ranging from medical concerns to financial details—without the fear of their data being logged or monitored.
While other platforms offer similar modes, Meta claims this is the first major AI product that maintains zero logs of conversations on its servers.

How Incognito Chat Works
Built using WhatsApp’s Private Processing technology, Incognito Chat creates a secure, temporary environment for every interaction. Key features of the new mode include:
- Invisible Conversations: Conversations are processed in a secure environment that even Meta cannot access or read.
- Disappearing Messages: By default, chats are not saved and disappear once the session is over, ensuring no long-term digital footprint.
- Text-Only Focus: During the initial rollout, the incognito mode will support text-based queries only, rather than images.
Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp, noted that the feature was developed specifically because users expressed discomfort about sharing sensitive information with a corporation, despite wanting the convenience of AI assistance.
The Accountability Debate
While the move has been praised by privacy advocates, some cybersecurity experts are raising concerns about the lack of a paper trail. Because messages disappear and are inaccessible even to Meta, there is a potential lack of accountability if the AI provides harmful or dangerous advice.
To mitigate this, Meta says its AI guardrails will err on the side of caution, refusing to answer requests that could be interpreted as illegal or harmful.

What’s Next: Sidechat
Incognito Chat is just the beginning of Meta’s privacy-focused AI roadmap. In the coming months, the company plans to introduce Sidechat. This feature will allow Meta AI to provide private help within an existing WhatsApp thread by understanding the context of the discussion—all without disrupting the main conversation or compromising the privacy of the other participants. At the same time, Meta appears to be expanding its focus on safety and moderation, with growing interest in monitoring the activity of underage users across its AI-powered platforms.
Incognito Chat is rolling out to WhatsApp and Meta AI app users globally over the next few months.
